On October 22, students from Lorain-Medina Rural Electric, North Central Electric, and Firelands Electric cooperatives participated in the Cooperative Youth Day in Columbus. The event brought together over 50 sophomores and juniors from schools within the cooperatives' service areas, along with LMRE board members, teachers, and co-op staff.
The group embarked on a trip to Columbus to learn about state history, government, and politics. During their visit, students received a VIP tour of the Statehouse and met with several state senators and representatives. Among those who greeted the group were Senators Reineke and Gavarone, Representatives Stein, McClain, Click, and staffers for Representative Miller.
The experience provided students with insights into the political process. Many expressed surprise at the complexity involved in passing legislation. They gained a deeper understanding of the effort required to pass bills even when there is bipartisan support. As they near voting age, students recognized the importance of engaging as informed citizens.
