South Carolina agencies and nonprofits are invited to apply for grants up to $20,000 from the Duke Energy Foundation's 2025 Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) Grant Program. The program aims to enhance severe weather emergency preparedness across the state by providing $500,000 in funding.

The HERO Grant Program, now in its fourth year, has already provided a total of $2 million in support since its inception. It was established in response to Hurricane Helene's significant impact on South Carolina, which prompted communities and first responders to reevaluate their disaster preparedness strategies. Tim Pearson, Duke Energy’s South Carolina president, stated that the grants aim "to help fill gaps identified when responding to historic storms like Helene."

Eligible projects for these grants include equipment upgrades, communication tools, specialized training, planning initiatives, and storm shelters. The application deadline is April 25.

Local leaders have praised the program's benefits. Jim Baber from the Hodges-Cokesbury Fire Department noted that grant-funded equipment proved essential during Hurricane Helene. Mac McMakin of the Travelers Rest Fire Department highlighted how new protective gear improved responder safety and efficiency. Joshua Hawkins from Anderson County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of radio equipment funded by previous grants in coordinating response activities.

Duke Energy Foundation supports various community needs with over $30 million annually. Funded by Duke Energy shareholders, it aims to meet the requirements of areas served by Duke Energy customers.

Duke Energy is a major energy holding company based in Charlotte, N.C., serving millions across several states and focusing on an energy transition towards cleaner resources.
