Duke Energy Florida is drawing attention to its EnergyWise Home program as summer approaches, offering customers the opportunity to earn up to $141 in annual bill credits. This initiative allows participants to enroll select appliances—such as central air conditioning units, electric water heaters, and pool pumps—to be temporarily cycled off during peak electricity demand periods.

Participation in the program not only offers financial incentives but also helps maintain steady rates for all Duke Energy Florida customers and preserves Florida’s natural resources. By reducing the strain on the electric system during high usage times, Duke Energy can avoid costly power purchases from the open market and reliance on older power plants. Additionally, it delays the need for new infrastructure.

Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president, stated, “The EnergyWise Home program is one of the many tools we have in our energy efficiency toolbox. It’s an easy, effective way for our customers to lower their electric bills and help meet their communities’ – and Florida’s – considerable energy needs.”

Duke Energy installs a device at no cost to cycle off enrolled appliances. Most events occur on weekdays and begin with cycling off water heaters and pool pumps for up to five hours. Central air conditioning units are cycled last—up to 16.5 minutes every 30 minutes—and are rarely impacted.

Currently, around 430,000 Duke Energy Florida customers participate in this program. They receive prorated credits based on electricity usage; however, credits apply anytime usage exceeds 600 kilowatt-hours regardless of interruptions.
