The Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron in Ohio has taken a significant step by installing 44 Hanwha solar modules on its roof. This installation forms an array with a capacity of 15.4 kW.
The solar system is expected to generate savings and attract new members for over three decades, ultimately paying for itself multiple times. Funded partly by contributions from church members, the solar array now generates 25% of the church's annual electricity needs and is projected to save $67,496 over 30 years.
The system is connected to the grid, enabling net metering with the local utility.
There are numerous solar-powered communities across Ohio that began when congregations decided to adopt solar energy.
Following the church's example, several parishioners have also installed solar systems. Collectively, they will offset the CO2 equivalent of 1.7 million pounds over the next 30 years.
These parishioners have encouraged their neighbors to consider solar energy as well, setting a precedent in their communities. By choosing Kokosing Solar, they have contributed $1,500 in funds for the church through the Solar Champion referral program.
