FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., is finalizing equipment inspections and maintenance to ensure a steady supply of electricity during the winter months. John Hawkins, President of FirstEnergy Pennsylvania, emphasized their focus on preparing the electric distribution and transmission systems for winter conditions. He stated, "We focus our winter preparations on readying our electric distribution and transmission systems to safely deliver electricity to our customers when they need it most to stay warm."
The company employs thermovision cameras to inspect critical components at substations, allowing workers to detect issues like loose connections or corrosion before they cause power outages. Helicopter inspections are conducted over more than 5,500 miles of transmission lines across Pennsylvania, checking for damage not visible from the ground.
Tree trimming has been completed along approximately 9,900 miles of power lines in Pennsylvania this year. This maintenance aims to reduce tree-related outages caused by ice and snow accumulation on branches. The company's vehicles, including bucket trucks, undergo thorough inspections to ensure readiness for freezing temperatures.
Earlier in the year, FE PA employees participated in annual storm drills designed to prepare staff for severe weather conditions. Customers can access tips for preparing for storms and check restoration updates via FirstEnergy's Power Center website.
For those concerned about rising energy costs during the cold season, FirstEnergy offers several tips such as sealing leaks around windows and doors, closing fireplace dampers when not in use, and ensuring proper home insulation.
