FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., is constructing a new substation in South Annville Township, Lebanon County. The facility, located off Route 422, aims to supply electricity to large warehouse facilities within a developing industrial complex.
The project includes new distribution lines connecting the substation to the local electric network. This enhancement will improve service reliability for over 2,100 Met-Ed customers in Annville, South Annville Township, and Palmyra. The substation will also provide a backup power feed to maintain service during outages or maintenance.
John Hawkins, President of FirstEnergy Pennsylvania, stated: "Our new substation will provide the critical infrastructure necessary to energize an enormous shipping hub in the busy motor freight corridor encompassing Interstates 78 and 81 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It will also provide operational flexibility for our local electric grid to better serve our residential and business customers in these fast-growing communities."
Construction began in spring 2024 with completion expected by early 2025. Crews have installed essential equipment such as steel structures and circuit breakers. A significant component, the 69-kilovolt (kV)-to-13.2-kV transformer, is anticipated for delivery in December.
The substation will feature two short power lines initially, with future plans for expansion including a third line. One line will serve Eagle Point Logistics Center while another supplies a facility across Killinger Road at Clear Springs Logistics Park.
Simultaneously, contractors are building a new 69-kV transmission line from an existing source to power the substation using 16 steel poles ranging from 45 to 70 feet tall.
This development is part of Energize365, FirstEnergy's multi-year initiative aimed at enhancing grid infrastructure through significant investments between 2024 and 2028. The program focuses on creating a more reliable grid that supports modern energy demands including electric vehicles and clean energy sources.
Met-Ed provides services to approximately 592,000 customers across eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania.
