Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., has completed its pre-winter inspections and maintenance to strengthen the electric grid across its 3,200-square-mile service area. This initiative aims to ensure safe and reliable power supply during the winter months.
The work involved proactive assessments of key equipment, vehicles, and the surrounding environment. These measures are intended to prepare for increased demand due to colder temperatures and potential damage from snow, ice, and winds during winter storms.
Doug Mokoid, President of FirstEnergy's New Jersey operations, stated: "JCP&L customers depend on safe, reliable electric service to keep warm and comfortable during these coldest months. While we've had a string of mild winters, we don't know what Mother Nature has in store for us this year, and we are making sure our system, our equipment and our team members are ready for whatever comes our way."
Seasonal preparations included several tasks such as winterizing substation buildings housing remote-controlled equipment, tuning up heating systems for substation components to prevent malfunctions in cold weather, inspecting batteries powering electrical devices that detect system abnormalities as well as motors operating switches to isolate issues. Additionally, high-tech thermal imaging cameras were used for equipment inspections to identify hardware problems or potential "hot spots." Transmission lines were inspected using helicopters in areas not visible from the ground. Company bucket trucks and other vehicles received servicing with special attention given to tires and air braking systems' condition.
Tree trimming throughout the year also plays a crucial role in reinforcing the power system before winter by maintaining proper clearances around electrical equipment. JCP&L has trimmed trees along more than 3,100 miles of power lines this year with plans to complete an additional 300 miles by December's end.
Apart from infrastructure maintenance, JCP&L employees participated in readiness exercises throughout the year testing restoration processes for storm-related outages. Safety procedures are reviewed with field employees focusing on navigating slippery conditions safely while ensuring crews stay hydrated and take breaks in warm trucks.
Customers can find tips on preparing for severe weather at FirstEnergy's Power Center online portal where they can also view restoration updates if storms cause outages.
