FirstEnergy is continuing its commitment to environmental sustainability through extensive tree planting efforts across its six-state service area. Recently, the company's Green Team in northeast Ohio undertook a significant project at Youngstown State University’s Legacy Forest in Mill Creek MetroParks’ Collier Preserve, Mahoning County. The team planted 1,600 trees, with each tree symbolizing an incoming freshman.

Despite challenging weather conditions, FirstEnergy Advanced Scientist Jessica Shaffer noted that the rain would aid the trees' growth after a dry year. “Showing up to work in the rain emphasizes the commitment of these volunteers to bettering their community and helping the environment. I commend them because it will absolutely benefit the trees they planted,” Shaffer stated. She highlighted that young trees require ample water when transplanted to establish their root systems.

Trees are crucial for environmental stability as they absorb carbon, manage stormwater, and preserve natural habitats while enhancing landscapes. This year alone, FirstEnergy employees have planted over 10,000 trees in Ohio. The breakdown includes 5,332 by Ohio Edison, 3,771 by Illuminating Company, and 1,183 by Toledo Edison.

The Ohio Green Team's initiatives contribute towards FirstEnergy's goal of planting 100,000 trees since starting this effort in 2020. These employee volunteers engage in various environmental projects such as park cleanups and pollinator initiatives.

For two consecutive years, FirstEnergy has collaborated with Youngstown State University to plant 1,600 trees annually in its Legacy Forest. Additionally, over recent years, more than 4,000 trees have been donated to Mill Creek MetroParks by FirstEnergy.
