JCP&L prepares electric grid for summer with extensive inspections

Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., has completed equipment inspections and maintenance across its central and northern New Jersey service area in preparation for the summer season. The measures aim to enhance the reliability of the electric grid amid high temperatures, storms, and potential hurricanes.

Doug Mokoid, President of FirstEnergy's New Jersey operations, stated: "Our maintenance and inspection programs are designed to ensure that we can provide the safe and reliable electric service our customers need to keep cool and comfortable during the hot, stormy summer months, and to meet the demands on our system that accompany the influx of seasonal tourism in our service territory."

Helicopter patrols have surveyed over 700 miles of high-voltage transmission lines this spring. These inspections are intended to identify issues such as damaged wire or broken crossarms that are not visible from ground level. Identified reliability concerns are promptly addressed.

In addition, JCP&L utilized thermovision cameras to capture infrared images of electrical equipment. This technology allows detection of potential problems within substations and on power lines that may not be apparent during regular visual inspections. Bright colors or "hot spots" in these images indicate possible equipment issues, prompting detailed inspections and repairs to prevent future outages.

Preparations also include readiness for severe weather events predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA forecasts an 85% chance of an above-normal hurricane season with up to 25 named storms, including up to seven major hurricanes.

Critical equipment like mobile substations has been strategically positioned near Jersey Shore communities to address higher electricity demand due to tourism. In northern New Jersey, flood walls at substations prone to river overflow have been tested for effectiveness.

- Use fans efficiently.

- Close drapes or blinds on sunny windows.

- Utilize programmable thermostats.

- Seal leaks with caulk or weather stripping.

- Check air conditioner filters regularly.

- Avoid using heat-producing appliances during peak hours.
