As temperatures rise, the Duke Energy Foundation is increasing its support for families struggling with energy bills. The foundation announced a contribution of $400,000 to the Share the Light Fund, aimed at assisting customers in financial hardship during the summer months.
This funding will be distributed across six states: North Carolina ($100,000), South Carolina ($75,000), Florida ($75,000), Indiana ($50,000), and Ohio & Kentucky ($100,000). This initiative builds on Duke Energy's ongoing support through the Share the Light Fund, which has provided over $11 million in assistance since 2022. The fund aids approximately 16,000 low-income households each year with overdue balances and reconnection fees.
"We know that behind every request for assistance is a story – a family, a friend, a community member working to get through a tough time," said Amy Strecker, president of Duke Energy Foundation. "Through Share the Light Fund and our local partners, we’re able to support our neighbors in their moment of need."
In addition to financial contributions, Duke Energy employees are volunteering with organizations like Crisis Assistance Ministry to distribute supplies and raise awareness about available help. For over 40 years, Duke Energy and its Foundation have supported utility assistance programs now unified under the Share the Light Fund.
Customers can also participate by making donations or opting for monthly bill rounding options. These contributions are matched by Duke Energy and its Foundation. Furthermore, customers can access tools such as Usage Alerts and free home energy assessments to manage energy consumption more efficiently.
The Duke Energy Foundation provides over $30 million annually in philanthropic support funded by Duke Energy shareholders. Duke Energy serves millions of customers across several states and continues to invest in grid upgrades and cleaner energy generation.
