Duke Energy, one of the largest energy holding companies in the United States, has expressed gratitude to its customers for their cooperation during a recent heat wave that swept through parts of North Carolina and South Carolina. The extreme temperatures led to a new summertime record for electricity usage, reaching 35,269 megawatt-hours on June 24, 2025. This surpassed the previous record set on July 9, 2024.
Ben Harrison, Duke Energy's vice president of grid operations – planning and operations, acknowledged the efforts made by customers to conserve energy during peak demand periods. "We appreciate our customers’ support this week to reduce their electricity use during the hottest parts of the day," he said. "We understand it can be inconvenient, but those actions made a significant difference for all."
The company managed to handle the increased demand with help from over 521,000 Carolinas customers enrolled in its customer demand response programs. These programs allow Duke Energy to manage peak demand effectively.
To meet growing energy needs across various states, Duke Energy utilizes a diverse mix of nuclear power, efficient natural gas, hydroelectricity, renewables and coal. It plans to expand its solar and energy storage capabilities alongside new natural gas plants over the next five years.
Duke Energy also provides several tips for consumers aiming to save on their electric bills during hot weather. Suggestions include setting thermostats at higher comfortable settings and using cooler water for laundry.
Additionally, Duke Energy offers savings programs such as free home energy assessments and rebates for equipment upgrades through its Smart $aver program. Customers can also benefit from credits by shifting energy use to off-peak times via participation in specific company programs.
For those needing payment flexibility or assistance due to financial constraints, Duke Energy offers installment payment plans and collaborates with local agencies on initiatives like Share the Light Fund.
