Duke Energy Foundation is distributing $500,000 through its 2025 Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) Grant Program to bolster emergency preparedness for severe weather in South Carolina. The funds are being allocated to over 38 nonprofits and government agencies across the state, with each receiving up to $20,000. These grants aim to address training needs, procure life-saving equipment, and introduce innovative technology identified as necessary following recent severe weather events.

The initiative comes as South Carolina braces for hurricane season. Past storms like Hurricane Helene have significantly impacted the region, prompting a reevaluation of disaster preparedness strategies by communities and first responders. The microgrants provided by Duke Energy Foundation will support local governments and nonprofits in enhancing their planning and response capabilities.

This year marks the fourth iteration of the annual $500,000 microgrant program, which has contributed a total of $2 million since its inception. Since 2022, the HERO Grant Program has issued 137 microgrants to various organizations throughout South Carolina.

Tim Pearson, Duke Energy’s South Carolina president, emphasized the importance of preparation: “The one thing our company and communities learned in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene is you can never be too prepared for severe weather events.”

Nicholas W. Ray from North Spartanburg Firefighters Foundation noted that new equipment funded by these grants has been crucial during past emergencies: “The addition of this drone will enhance a vital cache of rescue equipment that was previously provided by the HERO grant program and has saved numerous lives.”

Shannon Tanner from Florence Fire Department highlighted communication improvements: “Reliable communication is the backbone of effective emergency response... This funding will allow us to implement a much-needed vehicle repeater system.”

Dr. Mandy Gattis from South Carolina EMS Association pointed out organizational enhancements: “This funding represents a vital step toward building a more coordinated, rapid and effective medical response network for future large-scale emergencies.”

Justin Turner from Marion County reflected on learning from past disasters: “By learning from history and planning ahead, we equip ourselves to face the uncertainty of tomorrow’s storms.”

Duke Energy Foundation annually provides over $30 million in philanthropic support across communities served by Duke Energy customers. Duke Energy itself serves millions across several states with both electric and natural gas utilities while pursuing an energy transition focused on grid upgrades and cleaner energy solutions.
