Thirty Duke Energy lineworkers from North Carolina and South Carolina have qualified for this year's International Lineman’s Rodeo in Bonner Springs, Kansas. They achieved this by excelling in the Carolinas Lineman’s Rodeo, a regional event testing skills crucial for their roles, such as equipment repair and pole climbing.

"While we are always proud of our line teams, their resoluteness to compete in the rodeo this year after the significant impacts of Hurricane Helene last fall across our service areas is an affirmation of how strongly committed they are to our customers and communities," said Emily Henson, regional senior vice president, Power Grid Operations.

This year’s International Lineman’s Rodeo, held on October 18, will see the participation of top lineworkers from around the world. Among the notable winners is the team from the West Division, composed of Tyler Manick, Tyler Nickols, and Joshua Buckner, who were awarded the Overall Best Journeyman Team title.

Jordan Henderson, a Duke Energy journeyman lineworker, shared the value of such competitions: “The rodeo gives us a chance to show our family and friends what we do on a day-to-day basis, and it brings out some of the best teamwork you’ll ever see. And because it’s a competition, we get to have a little fun with each other while sharpening our skills and knowledge.”

Duke Energy holds three regional lineman’s rodeos each spring, including in the Carolinas, Florida, and the Midwest. The annual International Lineman’s Rodeo has a history of more than 40 years, focused on camaraderie and tradition among lineworkers.

Rick Grant, another senior vice president, highlighted the importance of the line teams' work: “Beyond battling extreme weather, the valuable work our line teams do every day is enabling Duke Energy to build a grid that is smarter, stronger and more reliable.”

Duke Energy is focusing on hiring and developing lineworker talent as the demand for skilled workers rises. Those looking to pursue a career in lineworking with Duke Energy are encouraged to contact community colleges offering training programs.

Duke Energy operates as one of the largest energy holding companies in the United States with services reaching 8.6 million electric utilities customers across six states. The company continues its transition towards a more sustainable energy future, investing in grid upgrades and exploring cleaner energy alternatives like renewables and energy storage.
