In recognition of National Safe Digging Month this April, Duke Energy and its subsidiary Piedmont Natural Gas are stressing the need to contact 811 before initiating any digging projects. This advance step aims to prevent damage to underground utility lines and enhance safety for both individuals and professionals.
Brian Weisker, Duke Energy's senior vice president and president of the natural gas business, emphasized the importance of this precaution: “Even if you’re digging just a few inches below the surface, underground utility lines can still be present.” He highlighted checking and being aware of subsurface utilities to prevent dangerous situations.
The national 811 “Call Before You Dig” service was established to allow anyone planning an excavation to have utility lines marked for free. This includes electric, natural gas, water, sewer, phone, and cable TV lines. It is recommended to contact 811 at least three business days before starting any digging activities.
In 2024 alone, Duke Energy and Piedmont documented more than 8,870 incidents involving damage to underground electric and natural gas lines within their operational areas. Specifically, the damage to natural gas facilities across the Carolinas, Tennessee, Ohio, and Kentucky amounted to over 2,950 cases, with electric network damages exceeding 5,920 cases.
Weisker pointed out, “Our strongest safeguard is raising awareness and providing continuous education about calling 811 before digging.” He reiterated the company's commitment to community and customer safety.
To learn more about 811, interested individuals are encouraged to visit Piedmont's Call 811 Before You Dig webpage or call 811 to get connected with their state's center.
