As spring begins, AEP Ohio is urging customers to plan carefully before planting trees near power lines. The company highlights the importance of considering the potential impact on electricity supply if tree branches make contact with power lines.
“Deciding to plant a tree is a big commitment. That tree will be enjoyed by future generations and neighbors, so we ask our customers to look up and look around before planting,” said Dale Hopkins, AEP Ohio Distribution Forestry Manager. “Our foresters are happy to come out and look at the space you have available to give suggestions on the best types of trees that won’t interfere with our power lines, allowing the natural beauty of the tree to shine through.”
AEP Ohio offers several tips for those planning to plant trees:
- Consider the potential height of a tree to ensure branches remain clear of power lines.
- Assess how wide a tree's canopy might become once fully grown.
- Check for underground utility lines before planting.
The company emphasizes assessing growth rate and tree form or shape in relation to available space.
