Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted has been appointed by Governor Mike DeWine to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President JD Vance. This appointment allows Husted to serve until December 15, 2026. A special election is scheduled for November 2026 to fill the remaining two years of Vance's six-year term.
Husted has an extensive background in state government, having served as Ohio Secretary of State, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, and a member of the Ohio Senate. During his tenure with the DeWine administration, he concentrated on workforce initiatives, economic development, and enhancing government efficiency.
Upon his appointment to the U.S. Senate, Lt. Gov. Husted stated, "I know Ohio well, and I will fight for Ohio as a U.S. senator. I look forward to working with President Trump, Vice President Vance, and the Republican majority who have an America First agenda to fight inflation, stop illegal immigration, and advance conservative values."
