Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., is finalizing two electric system upgrade projects in Monmouth County, New Jersey. These initiatives aim to improve service for over 4,000 customers and deter birds of prey from nesting on utility poles.
Doug Mokoid, President of FirstEnergy's New Jersey operations, highlighted the importance of employee input in identifying areas needing upgrades. "The open feedback system we maintain allows our employees to feel comfortable calling attention to areas of the electric system that they see need upgrades. These two projects are perfect examples of employee-led projects that are expected to help reinforce safe, reliable service for our customers," he stated.
In Neptune Township, JCP&L upgraded infrastructure supporting two neighborhood power lines by installing new fiberglass crossarms. These crossarms are stronger and require less maintenance than traditional materials. Additionally, three lightning arrestors were replaced along a power line to protect against lightning strikes. This project was completed in late 2024 and will benefit more than 1,100 customers.
Another project along the coast involves upgrading insulators on a high-voltage power line spanning nearly two miles. Fiberglass crossarms are replacing existing metal and wood ones as part of this effort. Scheduled for completion by late January, this work will enhance service for nearly 3,200 customers in Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach.
These efforts fall under Energize365, FirstEnergy's grid evolution program aiming to invest $26 billion between 2024 and 2028 across six states to create a smarter grid.
