The FirstEnergy Foundation has contributed a $5,000 grant to Table of Hope, a nonprofit organization in Morris County, New Jersey. This funding aims to support the Student Outreach and Academic Reinforcement (SOAR) program, which focuses on providing tutoring and mentoring for underserved students.
The SOAR program begins in the fifth grade and offers continuous educational support, including tutoring services and family engagement activities such as monthly dinners. These efforts are designed to build communication skills and connect families with essential resources. The program also runs during the summer through its Summer Bridge initiative, helping to prevent learning loss.
Teresa Williams, Executive Director of Table of Hope, highlighted the importance of this grant: “The grant from the FirstEnergy Foundation is essential for our SOAR program. It allows us to connect students with caring mentors and tailored educational resources, ensuring they receive the support they need to thrive.” She emphasized that partners like FirstEnergy are crucial in strengthening families and fostering community care.
The SOAR program further includes a Leadership Academy for middle school students who have participated in earlier tutoring efforts. This 10-week initiative helps students develop leadership skills and consider future academic paths while engaging with community leaders on social issues.
For high school students transitioning to higher education, the SOAR College Access Program (SOAR CAP) offers resources such as essay writing classes and financial aid guidance. This aspect of the program is particularly beneficial for first-generation college-bound students.
Doug Mokoid, President of FirstEnergy for New Jersey, expressed pride in supporting these initiatives: “It is all too easy to take for granted the educational opportunities we have in New Jersey. Many families in our communities need additional assistance to maximize these opportunities, and Table of Hope provides that vital support.”
This marks the fourth year that FirstEnergy Foundation has supported Table of Hope, reflecting a sustained commitment to local family empowerment and community resilience.
