American Transmission Systems, Inc. (ATSI), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), has completed the installation of approximately 250 new insulators along a 22-mile section of a transmission line that runs through Mahoning and Columbiana counties in northeast Ohio. This enhancement is expected to bolster the reliability and resilience of the electric grid for roughly 1,500 Ohio Edison customers in the Mahoning Valley.
The company installed new horizontal post insulators on the 69-kilovolt transmission line, which extends southwest from a substation in Boardman Township to another in Salem. These insulators play a crucial role in separating high-voltage transmission lines from their grounded support towers, thereby ensuring safe and consistent power delivery. The newly installed insulators attach directly to the poles, eliminating the need for crossarms, which have been removed.
The project commenced in August 2022 and concluded in March, with several poles also replaced as part of this $5 million initiative.
Carl Bridenbaugh, FirstEnergy's Vice President of Transmission stated, "This new, upgraded equipment will help prevent potential outages and ensure that our transmission system continues to serve customers safely and reliably in the future."
This endeavor forms part of Energize365, a multi-year grid evolution program focused on transmission and distribution investments designed to meet both current customer needs and future challenges. With planned investments totaling $26 billion between 2024 and 2028, this program aims to create a smarter, more secure grid that exceeds reliability targets while accommodating electric vehicles, home and business electrification, and clean energy sources.
