Gahanna, Ohio (April 23, 2024) — Spring is here, and with Arbor Day approaching, AEP Ohio is encouraging customers to plan before planting trees to prevent future power outages. Dale Hopkins, forestry manager at AEP Ohio, highlighted the importance of proper tree placement, stating, "Trees are a top cause of power outages," while emphasizing the efforts of the forestry team to maintain a safe distance between trees and power lines.

To help customers make informed decisions, AEP Ohio's forestry team provided tips for planting trees in suitable locations. Hopkins advised considering factors such as height, width, growth rate, and underground lines when selecting where to plant a tree. He recommended planting small trees like Redbud, Dogwood, and Crabapple at least 10-25 feet from power lines, medium trees like Washington Hawthorn and Golden Rain Trees at least 25-50 feet away, and tall trees such as Maple, Oak, Spruce, and Pine at least 50 feet from overhead lines.

Regarding the width of tree branches, Hopkins suggested ensuring they are at least 10 feet away from power lines at full growth. He emphasized that only trees with a small canopy spread, like Dogwood or Crabapple, are suitable for planting within this 10-foot range. Additionally, Hopkins highlighted the importance of considering the growth rate of trees, recommending slow-growing species for longevity and strength.

When planting trees, AEP Ohio also advised customers to be mindful of underground lines by calling 811 at least 48 hours in advance to prevent any accidents or damage. A video guide is available on the company's website to assist customers in selecting the right tree for the right location.
