FirstEnergy Corp. has announced its plan to plant over 25,000 trees throughout its service territory in 2024, with nearly 17,000 trees set to be planted in April alone. This initiative comes as part of the company's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and community support.

Jessica Shaffer, Advanced Scientist and Lead of FirstEnergy’s Green Teams, emphasized the importance of trees in stabilizing the environment and enhancing landscapes. She stated, “Trees play a vital role in stabilizing the environment by absorbing carbon, soaking up stormwater that can cause erosion and preserving stream and riverbanks, while simultaneously beautifying the landscape."

In 2023, FirstEnergy donated or planted around 25,500 trees in various locations, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and West Virginia. The company's tree-planting events, which involved nearly 500 FirstEnergy Green Team volunteers, were held in underserved areas to address environmental issues and promote community engagement.

Aside from the environmental benefits, FirstEnergy's tree-planting program aims to improve community landscapes and provide additional advantages such as shade and fruit production. Native tree species are carefully selected for each planting to ensure safety near power lines and minimize future maintenance needs.

FirstEnergy's Green Teams will collaborate with state park systems, schools, and environmental organizations in 2024 to continue their efforts in creating a sustainable future. To learn more about FirstEnergy’s environmental initiatives, visit fecorporateresponsibility.com.
