Mon Power employee Stewart Whitehair, with 30 years of experience as an electrician, is actively involved in promoting opportunities in the technical field. Whitehair serves on the Marion County Technical Center’s Advisory Council for its electrical program and participates in an annual competition organized by SkillsUSA, a workforce development organization.

Whitehair emphasized the importance of attracting young people to vocational and technical careers, stating, “We need to get more young people interested in pursuing careers in vocational and technical jobs.” He highlighted SkillsUSA's dedication to preparing students for various career fields such as carpentry, culinary arts, electrical construction wiring, industrial motor control, plumbing, and welding, aiming to strengthen the nation's workforce.

Having judged the Electrical Construction Wiring and Industrial Motor Control competitions, Whitehair expressed his enthusiasm for witnessing young participants showcasing their skills, saying, “It gets us excited to see young minds work to wire circuits, bend conduit and troubleshoot motor control circuits.”

Utilizing company-issued "Volunteer Time Off" (VTO), Whitehair and his colleague Tim Lee volunteered to judge the competitions, emphasizing Mon Power's support for employees to contribute to the community. Whitehair appreciated the opportunity to guide students interested in vocational and technical careers, noting, “College isn’t for everyone, and young people interested in pursuing careers in vocational and technical jobs can make a good salary and earn a good living.”

The winners of the state competition will advance to the national SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta. For those interested in internship and career opportunities with FirstEnergy, including Mon Power, information can be found on the company’s website.
