AEP Ohio Plan to Make Electric Grid Improvements, Offer New Customer Savings Programs Approved

GAHANNA, Ohio (April 03, 2024) — AEP Ohio, a subsidiary of American Electric Power (Nasdaq: AEP), has received approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) for its Electric Security Plan (ESP). The plan outlines AEP Ohio's commitment to improving the electric grid, supporting economic development, and introducing new programs to help customers manage energy usage and save money.

Marc Reitter, President, and COO of AEP Ohio, expressed the company's dedication to enhancing customer reliability while minimizing rate impacts: "Our Electric Security Plan lays out a clear path to improve reliability for our customers. We understand many of our customers are experiencing higher prices due to rising inflation and we worked hard to limit rate impacts in this agreement. Our team also recognizes the importance of working efficiently and effectively as we execute our plan."

Reitter also emphasized the importance of customer satisfaction and collaboration with various stakeholders: "We know our customers depend on, and deserve, to have power when they need it. The AEP Ohio team has worked with PUCO staff and numerous other groups to ensure that we are hearing from all of our customers."

The ESP includes investments of over $1.5 billion in critical distribution system upgrades to address aging infrastructure and accommodate new customers. Under the ESP V term, which runs from June 2024 through May 2028, residential customers using 1,000 kWh per month can expect minimal rate increases.

In addition to grid improvements, the ESP introduces new initiatives such as the High Efficiency for Low-Income Program (HELP), aimed at supporting low-income customers in enhancing energy efficiency in their homes. AEP Ohio will also contribute to the Neighbor to Neighbor program, providing utility assistance grants to eligible customers.

Furthermore, customers can benefit from rebates by participating in a smart thermostat demand response program, while electric vehicle owners can save up to 70% on distribution charges by charging their vehicles during off-peak hours.

The ESP, developed to reduce power outages and fortify the electric grid against adverse conditions, reflects AEP Ohio's commitment to customer service and sustainability.

AEP Ohio's ESP plan was submitted in January 2023, with the approved settlement reflecting a collaborative effort to enhance services and support for customers.
