Potomac Edison encourages Maryland customers to seek help with seasonal energy bills

Potomac Edison, a FirstEnergy electric company, announced on Mar. 24 that it is encouraging Maryland customers to take advantage of various bill assistance programs as changing weather leads to higher electricity use and increased costs.

The announcement aims to support families who may be struggling with energy expenses during periods of extreme temperatures. Potomac Edison highlighted several state and local programs designed to provide financial relief and protection for eligible households.

Jim Myers, President of FirstEnergy West Virginia and Maryland, said, “We understand that changing weather can drive up energy use and put pressure on family budgets, but no one should feel overwhelmed by their energy bills. We’re committed to helping Maryland customers find the programs and resources that can offer real support and peace of mind.”

Among the available assistance options are the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP), which offers grants for those having trouble paying or who have lost service; Electric Universal Service Program (EUSP) for ongoing bill support; EUSP Arrearage Retirement Assistance for forgiveness of past due amounts up to $2,000; Utility Service Protection Program (USPP) protecting against utility shutoffs during heating season; Community Energy Fund (CEF) providing emergency payments; EmPOWER Low Income Energy Efficiency Program offering free home audits and improvements; and the 2-1-1 Helpline available year-round.

FirstEnergy provides service to more than 6 million customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland and New York according to the official website. The company manages approximately 24,000 miles of transmission lines as well as over 269,000 miles of distribution lines as detailed on its website.
