Potomac Edison announces legislative energy relief refunds for Maryland residential customers

0Comments

Potomac Edison residential customers in Maryland will receive bill credits as part of the Legislative Energy Relief Refund. This initiative was established through the Next Generation Energy Act, which was passed by the Maryland General Assembly in April 2025. The refund aims to help families manage higher electricity costs.

According to Jim Myers, FirstEnergy’s President of West Virginia and Maryland: “While Potomac Edison doesn’t set electricity supply prices – the price for the actual electricity used by customers – we are committed to coordinating with state officials to help customers manage costs through these credits. We also offer year-round programs for those who need extra help with their electric bills.”

Eligible customers will receive two bill credits: one in September 2025 and another in January or February 2026. The amount credited will depend on each household’s average electricity usage over the past year. To qualify for the first credit, a customer must have an active residential account as of June 1, 2025, have recorded usage between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, and maintain an active account when the credit is applied.

No action is required from eligible customers; credits will be applied automatically. Potomac Edison also encourages donations to local energy assistance programs for those interested in helping others.

The funding for these credits comes from payments made by utilities and suppliers under Maryland’s renewable energy laws. These credits will not be billed back to customers.

Potomac Edison offers additional resources to help manage energy use and costs throughout the year. These include bill assistance programs for income-eligible customers and those facing financial hardship, available at firstenergycorp.com/billassist; energy efficiency tools such as rebates and home energy solutions at energysavemd.com; and practical tips for saving energy at firstenergycorp.com/saveenergy.

Potomac Edison serves about 285,000 customers across seven counties in Maryland and approximately 155,000 in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. FirstEnergy Corp., its parent company, operates one of the largest investor-owned electric systems in the U.S., serving more than six million customers across several states.
