Net metering will remain unchanged in Ohio following a recent decision by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO). The commission completed its five-year review of net-energy-metering rules and determined that no modifications are necessary, keeping current compensation structures for both existing and future solar customers.
Net metering allows customers to receive credit for excess electricity their solar systems send back to the grid. This policy has been seen as a key incentive for homeowners and businesses to invest in solar energy by reducing payback periods and lowering long-term energy costs.
Proposed changes had threatened to reduce compensation for solar customers, which could have discouraged new installations across the state. However, PUCO’s ruling preserves the current approach. “This ruling is a major win for Ohioans—and a meaningful step forward for the state’s energy policy,” according to Kokosing Solar.
The decision comes at a time when Ohio faces increasing electricity demand due to factors such as data center growth, industrial expansion, electrification, and population increases. Distributed energy resources like solar are expected to play an important role in easing stress on the power grid.
“Thousands of Ohio families and businesses have already invested in solar based on current net‑metering rules. Proposed cuts could have weakened their expected returns and increased payback times, undermining confidence in the market,” said Kokosing Solar. “PUCO’s decision ensures that residents who made responsible, long‑term investments are treated fairly.”
Solar customers contribute electricity during high-demand periods. Maintaining full retail-rate net metering means these customers continue receiving appropriate credit for their contributions. Civic engagement also played a part; hundreds of residents submitted comments urging PUCO to maintain existing rules.
Kokosing Solar noted: “With this ruling, Ohio reaffirms its commitment to an energy landscape that is… Preserving net metering also supports Ohio’s growing solar workforce and solar‑energy economy, encouraging continued investment in residential, commercial, and community solar projects.”
For homeowners with existing solar installations, PUCO’s decision protects their investments. For those considering going solar, fair compensation remains secure.
Kokosing Solar provides full-service installation for solar and battery storage projects serving both residential and commercial clients across several states. The company combines decades of experience in solar with a strong construction background through its parent company Kokosing group—one of the largest construction firms in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions (official website). With more than 1,600 completed projects spanning 14 states (official website), Kokosing Solar emphasizes customer relationships and community investment (official website).
By maintaining net metering policies, Ohio aims to ensure reliability and affordability while supporting further adoption of clean energy solutions throughout the state.
