Homeowners urged to prepare for spring storms with safety checks

0Comments

Spring can bring both renewal and severe weather, posing risks such as storms and flooding. It is crucial for homeowners to take steps to ensure their homes and families are prepared for potential spring storms.

To prioritize safety, families should sign up for community emergency warning systems, discuss storm safety plans, and prepare an emergency kit. This kit should include essentials like water bottles, non-perishable food, blankets, first-aid supplies, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio.

Power outages are common during severe weather. Homeowners can prepare by signing up for outage alerts, stocking emergency kits, knowing how to report power outages, and considering the purchase of a generator. If a generator is used, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation.

Inspecting the exterior of the home is another vital step in preparation. Homeowners should check for loose roof shingles or siding and repair them if necessary. Tree branches overhanging houses or driveways should be trimmed back. Unattached structures like sheds should be secured firmly. Gutters and downspouts must be cleared of debris to ensure proper drainage away from the foundation. The grading around the foundation should slope upwards to prevent water accumulation that could lead to basement leaks.

Sump pumps play a critical role in preventing basement flooding during heavy rainfalls. Homeowners should inspect sump pump pits for debris that might clog the pump and ensure all components function correctly by testing with water.

Flood readiness involves understanding property elevation and keeping sandbags or other protective materials on hand if living in flood-prone areas. Contacting local emergency management agencies can provide guidance on protective measures specific to one’s home environment. Sealing basement walls with waterproof compounds can help prevent seepage during floods.

These proactive steps can help mitigate damage from spring storms and keep families safe during adverse weather conditions.
