Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., has announced donations totaling $40,000 to two nonprofit organizations in Maryland and West Virginia. The contributions were made on behalf of the FirstEnergy Foundation as part of its annual holiday “Gifts of the Season” campaign.
Lorna Wisham, President of the FirstEnergy Foundation, stated: “We’re pleased to make these donations to two organizations that are doing extraordinary work and providing meaningful support to Maryland and West Virginia communities we serve.”
The beneficiaries include Operation Second Chance in Montgomery County, Maryland, which assists wounded veterans and their families. The organization plans to use its donation for retreats at Heroes Ridge at Raven Rock. Cindy McGrew, CEO of Operation Second Chance, expressed gratitude for the grant: “We are deeply grateful to the FirstEnergy Foundation for this generous grant, which will have a transformative impact on the lives of disabled veterans and their families.”
In West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, Stars That Shine will utilize its funding to restart its high school program in 2025. Alisha Puller, Executive Director of Stars That Shine said: “This donation will enable us to empower, educate and lead girls at the high school level.”
Since 2016, the “Gifts of the Season” initiative has supported various programs aligned with diversity, equity and inclusion values. The FirstEnergy Foundation requires recipients to be first-time grant beneficiaries with a focus on diverse categories.
Potomac Edison serves approximately 285,000 customers in Maryland and about 155,000 customers in West Virginia. FirstEnergy operates one of the largest investor-owned electric systems in several states across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions.
