FirstEnergy invests over $200 million for grid reliability upgrades in northwest Ohio

A major project to improve electric service reliability is underway in Fulton County, Ohio, aimed at strengthening the power grid for residents and businesses in the greater Toledo area. The initiative is being led by American Transmission Systems, Inc. (ATSI), a FirstEnergy Transmission company.

The project involves constructing a new substation and a nine-mile-long 345-kilovolt transmission line. These upgrades are designed to help prevent or reduce the impact of power outages in Delta Village as well as Fulton, Pike, Swan Creek, and York townships. The enhancements are also intended to support future growth in northwest Ohio.

The new substation is expected to be operational by December 2026. It will connect to the existing Sydney Substation through two new half-mile power lines. This setup is intended to increase electricity capacity in the area and make it easier for crews to restore service during outages.

According to FirstEnergy, its transmission companies have collectively reduced outages by 50% on high-voltage lines exceeding 100 kilovolts since 2014. The company attributes this improvement to ongoing investments in infrastructure.

Mark Mroczynski, President of Transmission for FirstEnergy, said: “Northwest Ohio has seen tremendous industrial growth in recent years, bringing new jobs, families and opportunities to the region. We’re proud to support that momentum by investing in the power infrastructure needed to meet today’s demand and tomorrow’s potential.”

The project is part of FirstEnergy’s Energize365 program—a $28 billion investment plan scheduled between 2025 and 2029—to modernize the electric grid. In northwest Ohio alone, ATSI plans to invest more than $200 million over the next few years on high-voltage grid improvements.

FirstEnergy serves customers across several states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland and New York. Its transmission subsidiaries operate about 24,000 miles of lines connecting regions in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.
