FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) announced the appointment of four new executives to lead its Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey state electric company businesses and its stand-alone transmission companies. This move is part of the company’s strategy to enhance execution and customer investments at the local level.
John Hawkins will serve as President of Pennsylvania effective June 2. Torrence Hinton will take over as President of Ohio on June 24. Doug Mokoid will become President of New Jersey starting June 17. Mark Mroczynski will assume the role of President of Transmission beginning June 2.
The company is in the final stages of selecting an executive for its combined West Virginia/Maryland division and expects to announce this appointment soon.
These executives will report to Wade Smith, President of FirstEnergy Utilities. They are expected to help execute FirstEnergy’s new business structure that aims to shift decision-making and accountability closer to customers.
The appointed leaders will be responsible for operational excellence, financial performance, regulatory strategy, and outcomes within their jurisdictions. The structure is designed to improve execution and customer investment at the local level, benefiting communities served by FirstEnergy’s electric companies.
Mroczynski will oversee the strategic direction and operation of FirstEnergy Transmission, LLC assets such as American Transmission Systems, Incorporated (ATSI), Mid-Atlantic Interstate Transmission (MAIT), Trans-Allegheny Interstate Line Company (TrAILCo), and Keystone Appalachian Transmission Company (KATCo). He will manage profit-and-loss responsibilities for the transmission business while directing regulatory and policy strategies.
Wade Smith stated, “This group of dynamic executives has the experience and knowledge to help our state and transmission businesses execute on our investment plan while elevating the customer experience and achieving successful financial and regulatory outcomes.”
Jim Fakult, current President of New Jersey Operations, will retire after 37 years with FirstEnergy. He will remain with the company through September 1 as Mokoid transitions into his new role. Smith thanked Fakult for his contributions during his tenure at FirstEnergy.

John Hawkins joined FirstEnergy in 2022 as Vice President of Operations Support & Distribution Engineering. He previously held various leadership roles at Entergy Louisiana, NextEra/Florida Power & Light, Lone Star Transmission, and Duke Energy. Hawkins holds a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology from Purdue University and an MBA from Indiana University.
Torrence Hinton comes from WEC Energy Group where he was President of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas companies in Chicago. Hinton has a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering from University of Illinois at Chicago, and an MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Doug Mokoid was previously Vice President & Region President at Atlantic City Electric/Delmarva Power (an Exelon Company). He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Rutgers University and a juris doctorate degree.
Mark Mroczynski has been Acting Vice President Operations for FirstEnergy over the past year leading major business units including Transmission and Distribution Operations among others. He joined FirstEnergy in 2004 after working at J&L Specialty Steel Inc., holding senior positions since then. Mroczynski earned a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from The University of Akron and an Executive MBA from Kent State University.
FirstEnergy serves more than six million customers across several states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland, and New York through its electric distribution companies. Its transmission subsidiaries operate approximately 24,000 miles connecting Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions.
