Energy-saving tips for homeowners going on vacation

0Comments

As the spring break and summer seasons approach, many individuals are preparing for vacations. While planning a getaway, it’s essential to consider energy-saving measures at home. Implementing these steps can help avoid unnecessary electricity use and reduce costs.

One simple measure is to unplug electronics and appliances before leaving. Many devices consume power even when turned off, so unplugging them can effectively cut down on energy consumption. This includes items like phone chargers that remain plugged in without active use.

Additionally, using timers for lights is advisable. Although some lights should remain on for security reasons, keeping the house illuminated around the clock is unnecessary. Timers ensure lights are off during daylight hours, saving energy and money.

Water heating accounts for about 18% of home energy usage. To prevent waste while away, adjust the water heater temperature or activate “vacation mode” if available.

Thermostats also offer opportunities for savings. Programmable or smart thermostats often include a vacation mode feature that adjusts settings based on departure and return dates, optimizing heating or cooling use during absence.
