Electric Grid Upgrades Underway in Lorain County

0Comments

American Transmission Systems, Inc. (ATSI), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., is currently undertaking a project in Lorain County, Ohio, to enhance the regional transmission system and minimize power outages for Ohio Edison customers. The initiative involves replacing over 900 insulator assemblies along two high-voltage power lines in the area.

FirstEnergy’s Vice President of Transmission, Carl Bridenbaugh, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “By installing new, upgraded equipment along these transmission lines, we can help prevent potential power outages and ensure that our transmission system continues to serve customers safely and reliably in the future.”

The project focuses on two 138-kilovolt power lines in Grafton and Elyria, with ATSI replacing 927 insulator assemblies on 196 transmission structures. The work, which commenced in late February, is anticipated to be finalized by August, with further plans to replace additional structures next year.

This initiative is part of the Energize365 program, a comprehensive grid evolution effort by FirstEnergy aimed at enhancing transmission and distribution infrastructure to meet current and future electricity demands. The program, with an investment plan of $26 billion between 2024 and 2028, aims to create a more resilient grid capable of accommodating advancements in clean energy sources, electric vehicles, and home electrification.

ATSI’s transmission services cover regions in Ohio and western Pennsylvania, managing over 8,100 miles of transmission lines, substations, and related facilities. The project underscores FirstEnergy’s commitment to integrity, safety, reliability, and operational excellence in serving more than six million customers across multiple states.
