Duke Energy has expressed its appreciation to customers in the Carolinas for reducing electricity use on Monday morning, when unusually cold temperatures led to increased demand for power. The company stated that these conservation efforts helped ease pressure on the electric grid and contributed to maintaining reliable service during one of the season’s coldest mornings.

“Customer conservation made a meaningful difference today,” said Gerald Wilson, Duke Energy vice president of grid operations. “We appreciate every household and business that adjusted their routines to help manage energy demand on the grid through this period of unusual cold, and we’re grateful for the support from local, state and federal officials who helped encourage conservation. Our teams continue to work around the clock to ensure that our power plants and grid remain ready to meet our customers’ energy needs.”

Duke Energy reported it is well positioned to meet customer demand for the remainder of the week. The company continues efforts to expand its diverse energy portfolio in response to economic growth and increasing energy needs in North Carolina and South Carolina.

The utility is also encouraging ongoing energy-saving habits as cold weather persists. It provides various low- or no-cost tips at duke-energy.com/SeasonalSavings, as well as flexible payment options such as installment plans, selecting due dates, or requesting extensions. Additional assistance programs include Share the Light Fund, Payment Assistance Finder, and referrals to community resources via 211.org.

Customers can explore different rate options or enroll qualifying smart thermostats for bill credits. Tools are available online or through the Duke Energy mobile app for tracking energy use.

Duke Energy serves about 4.7 million electric customers across North Carolina and South Carolina—approximately 3.8 million in North Carolina and nearly 860,000 in South Carolina. Nationwide, Duke Energy’s electric utilities serve 8.6 million customers across six states and own more than 55,000 megawatts of capacity. Its natural gas services reach about 1.7 million customers in five states.

The company is currently investing in significant upgrades to its electric grid while expanding cleaner generation sources including natural gas, nuclear power, renewables, and energy storage solutions.
