As a heat wave brings triple-digit temperatures to the Carolinas, Duke Energy is providing guidance for customers seeking to manage energy use and reduce costs. The company has issued recommendations as the region faces near-record highs and heat alerts are in effect across much of the eastern United States.
Among its suggestions, Duke Energy advises setting thermostats to the highest comfortable temperature. According to the company, “Even a couple of degrees can help save energy and money. Keep in mind: Your system will run longer – using more energy – the hotter it is outside even if your thermostat setting never changes.”
The utility also recommends washing clothes with cooler water. “Switching your temperature setting from hot to warm can cut a laundry load’s energy use in half,” according to Duke Energy. Other tips include running heat-producing appliances during cooler morning hours, closing curtains and blinds on sunny sides of homes, and operating ceiling fans counterclockwise during summer months.
Duke Energy is offering several programs aimed at helping customers save on their bills. Customers can sign up for a free home energy assessment that includes an efficiency kit and personalized advice. The Smart $aver program provides rebates for upgrades such as HVAC systems, water heaters, pool pumps, and attic insulation.
Customers who participate in demand-shifting programs—such as Power Manager or EnergyWise Home—can receive bill credits by allowing their smart thermostats to adjust usage during peak times.
For those facing financial hardship, installment payment plans are available. Duke Energy works with local agencies through resources like the Share the Light Fund and Low Income Home Energy Assistance programs. A Payment Assistance Finder tool helps connect customers with local support using their zip code.
Duke Energy serves 8.6 million electric customers across North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, and 1.7 million natural gas customers in several states. The company continues investing in grid improvements and cleaner energy sources including renewables and storage technologies (https://www.duke-energy.com/our-company/about-us).
