Duke Energy has announced plans to seek approval from the Public Service Commission of South Carolina (PSCSC) for constructing a new natural gas power plant in Anderson County. This proposal marks the company’s first request in a decade to build new generation facilities in South Carolina.
The company aims to address the growing electricity needs of nearly 860,000 retail electric customers across 30 counties in the state. Duke Energy’s initiative aligns with efforts by state leaders to enhance electricity capacity, spurred by economic development and population growth.
The project will benefit from a partnership with GE Vernova, which will supply natural gas turbines and other equipment manufactured in Greenville, S.C. This collaboration is intended to support advanced manufacturing, data centers, and population expansion.
Duke Energy expects to submit its construction application later this year. If approved, construction would commence in summer 2027, with operations anticipated by early 2031. The facility is planned on approximately 200 acres along Highway 81 South near True Temper Road in Anderson County. It is designed to utilize existing transmission infrastructure to provide about 1,400 megawatts of electricity.
Governor Henry McMaster commented on the proposal: “South Carolina’s continued prosperity depends on reliable, forward-looking energy projects like this one.” Speaker of the House Murrell Smith added that Duke Energy’s investment reflects solutions encouraged by the S.C. Energy Security Act. Senate President Thomas Alexander expressed gratitude for Duke Energy’s commitment to future energy security in South Carolina.
Anderson County Council Chairman Tommy Dunn highlighted the longstanding relationship between Duke Energy and Anderson County, noting potential benefits for local schools and the economy. Tim Pearson, Duke Energy South Carolina President, emphasized that building this modern facility is crucial for planning a reliable energy future.
