Duke Energy offers tips and programs to help customers save energy during cold snap

As cold weather is expected to arrive next week, Duke Energy has outlined steps customers can take to reduce energy use and lower their bills. The company encourages people to prepare for the colder temperatures by making adjustments at home that could help manage heating costs.

Duke Energy suggests several measures such as setting thermostats to the lowest comfortable temperature, sealing leaks and adding insulation to prevent drafts, changing air filters regularly for better airflow, using sunlight to naturally warm homes during the day, and running ceiling fans clockwise in winter to distribute warm air more effectively.

Customers who have participated in Duke Energy’s efficiency programs since 2019 have collectively saved over $1 billion on their bills. The company offers a range of programs aimed at helping customers improve energy efficiency during the winter months. These include free home energy assessments that provide personalized reports and efficiency kits, rebates through the Smart $aver program for upgrading equipment and insulation, bill credits for enrolling smart thermostats or water heaters in Power Manager/EnergyWise Home which shifts usage to off-peak times, and weatherization assistance with free upgrades for income-qualified households.

Duke Energy serves 8.6 million electric customers across six states and operates 55,100 megawatts of capacity. Its natural gas utilities reach 1.7 million customers in five states.
