Prolonged cold weather across the Carolinas has led to higher home energy use, resulting in increased utility bills for many residents. Duke Energy is providing guidance and resources to help customers manage these costs during the ongoing period of below-normal temperatures.
According to Duke Energy, the region is experiencing several days of freezing or subfreezing temperatures, which are 10 to 20 degrees lower than average for this time of year. The company notes that this may be the longest stretch of cold weather since January 2018. There is also a possibility of snow accumulation on Saturday, highlighting the unusual nature of this extended cold snap.
Duke Energy explained that heating systems run longer when temperatures remain low, leading to higher energy consumption. To assist customers, the company has outlined several measures and programs aimed at reducing energy use and offering flexible billing options.
Among its recommendations, Duke Energy suggests setting thermostats to the lowest comfortable temperature, sealing leaks and adding insulation, using sunlight by opening blinds during the day and closing them at night, and operating ceiling fans clockwise to distribute warm air more effectively.
The company offers incentives for those who enroll qualifying smart thermostats in its Power Manager/EnergyWise Home program. Participants can receive a $150 initial bill credit and $50 annually thereafter by allowing brief adjustments—up to four degrees—to their thermostat settings during peak electricity demand periods.
Customers can also participate in a time-of-use rate plan called Flex Savings Option by shifting some energy usage to off-peak hours for potential savings.
To provide payment flexibility, Duke Energy allows customers to choose their bill due date with its Pick Your Due Date option or request short extensions if needed. Installment plans are available for those with past-due balances.
For those requiring further assistance, Duke Energy directs customers to its Payment Assistance Finder tool that connects users with local organizations offering utility bill support. The Share the Light Fund combines community and company contributions to help qualifying individuals pay their bills. Additionally, dialing 211 connects people with additional community resources in their area.
