The Duke Energy Foundation announced on Apr. 27 a commitment of $1 million to nonprofit organizations across North Carolina that provide essential community services such as housing stability, food access, health care, and utility assistance.

This funding aims to help vulnerable populations meet their basic needs and maintain independence. The initiative is particularly focused on supporting seniors and assisting residents with utility-related challenges.

Of the total amount, $500,000 will be awarded to 20 nonprofits that support seniors in areas including housing assistance, food programs, transportation, and benefits navigation. Nonprofits can apply for grants of up to $25,000 each through May 29. An additional $500,000 will go toward Share the Light Fund agencies statewide. These agencies partner with Duke Energy Foundation to assist neighbors with utility bills and other critical services.

Kendal Bowman, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president said: “Community partners play an essential role across the state by delivering trusted, on-the-ground support and connecting neighbors to resources that help them remain safe, healthy and independent. We’re grateful for their leadership and dedication to making the communities we serve stronger.”

According to Duke Energy Foundation’s statement, more than $1 million has already been distributed through Share the Light Fund in 2026 so far. Customers seeking assistance can visit Share the Light Fund for more information about accessing available funds.

The Duke Energy Foundation provides nearly $30 million annually in philanthropic support funded by shareholders. Duke Energy itself is one of America’s largest energy holding companies serving electric customers in six states and natural gas customers in four states.

As these investments continue throughout North Carolina communities this year, officials say they hope these resources will strengthen local safety nets for those most at risk.
