Duke Energy has asked its Florida customers to voluntarily reduce their electricity usage during the morning hours of Monday, February 2, 2026. The request comes as the state faces unusually cold temperatures not seen since 2018, resulting in higher than normal electricity demand across the Southeast.

The company advised customers to lower their thermostats to the lowest comfortable setting and avoid using major appliances such as washers, dryers, and dishwashers between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m. on Monday. Customers are also encouraged to turn off unnecessary devices and lights, and electric vehicle owners are asked to charge their vehicles at midday when demand is lower.

“Sabemos que la electricidad es esencial en la vida cotidiana de nuestros clientes y reconocemos que reducir el consumo de electricidad no es fácil,” said Melissa Seixas, state president of Duke Energy Florida. “Agradecemos la cooperación y la comprensión de nuestros clientes mientras trabajamos para seguir prestando un servicio seguro y fiable a más de 2 millones de clientes durante esta ola de frío.”

Duke Energy Florida serves about two million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in a service area covering 13,000 square miles with an energy capacity of 12,300 megawatts. Duke Energy is one of the largest electric power holding companies in the United States with approximately 8.6 million customers across several states and a total owned capacity of 55,100 megawatts.

The company continues its efforts toward a cleaner energy future by investing in grid improvements and expanding its generation from natural gas, nuclear power, renewables, and energy storage.
