As storm season approaches, the Duke Energy Foundation has announced a commitment of $1.5 million through its 2025 Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) grant program. This funding aims to enhance community readiness and resilience across Duke Energy’s service territories, with a continued partnership with the American Red Cross.

Duke Energy Foundation is investing in training, lifesaving equipment, and innovative technology to aid in disaster planning and recovery operations. “These grants are an investment in the resilience of our communities,” said Amy Strecker, president of Duke Energy Foundation. The HERO grant program supports local nonprofits, first responders, and emergency management agencies to prepare for severe weather emergencies.

Funding will be distributed across six states: North Carolina ($500,000), South Carolina ($500,000), Indiana ($330,000), Florida ($163,000), Ohio & Kentucky ($67,500). Additionally, $100,000 is allocated to the American Red Cross for expanding its Emergency App that provides real-time alerts and preparedness tips.

Rebecca Pittman from the American Red Cross emphasized the importance of strong partnerships during disasters. Last year alone saw significant contributions from Duke Energy and its Foundation to support affected communities during a destructive storm season.

This initiative continues Duke Energy Foundation’s commitment to emergency preparedness with over $8 million granted in recent years across multiple states. The partnership with the American Red Cross has seen combined support exceeding $2.5 million over five years.

The Duke Energy Foundation provides more than $30 million annually in philanthropic support funded by Duke Energy shareholders. Meanwhile, Duke Energy itself serves millions of customers across several states and is working towards a smarter energy future with investments in grid upgrades and cleaner generation technologies.
