Dominion Energy Warns Customers Against Utility Scams

0Comments

Dominion Energy South Carolina is warning customers to be vigilant and watch out for potential utility scams during National Consumer Protection Week. Sam Dozier, the general manager of customer service at Dominion Energy South Carolina, emphasized the importance of recognizing the warning signs of scams, stating, “Criminals are working around the clock to steal personal information and money from utility customers across the country. We want to make sure our customers can recognize the red flags so they don’t become a scammer’s next victim.”

According to Dominion Energy South Carolina, some common red flags of utility scams include threatening service disconnection if immediate payment is not made, attempts to gain a customer’s trust through personable interactions, and requesting payment via unconventional methods such as credit or debit card over the phone, wire transfers, money orders, or prepaid/gift cards.

To protect themselves, Dominion Energy advises customers to always be cautious and never allow individuals claiming to be Dominion Energy employees into their homes without proper identification or appointment. It’s also crucial to avoid providing sensitive information like Social Security Numbers, account numbers, or financial details over the phone. Customers are encouraged to verify their account status by checking their dominionenergy.com account, using the company’s mobile app, or contacting the number provided on their energy bill.

Further scam prevention tips can be found on dominionenergy.com/scams. Dominion Energy, serving about 7 million customers in 15 states, is dedicated to providing reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly energy. The company aims to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050.
