In a recent incident at a meeting in the Touchstone rooms of a statewide office, a director’s quick thinking and decisive actions saved a life, highlighting the importance of safety leadership in organizations.

During the meeting, a director suddenly appeared to be in distress, leading CEO Pat O’Loughlin and Nila Moyers to intervene. Nila attempted the Heimlich maneuver unsuccessfully, prompting Pat to step in and successfully clear the director’s airway. The director later revealed that she was on the verge of passing out before receiving assistance.

Reflecting on the incident, an unnamed source commended Nila for her actions, stating, “Wow! That’s safety leadership at its finest. Way to go, Nila!” The same source also expressed gratitude towards Pat for his swift response, emphasizing the significance of supporting a strong safety culture within an organization.

The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of being proactive and caring for others in times of need. As another unnamed source pointed out, “There are so many lessons to be learned here, but maybe the main lesson is to simply care for others enough to be inconvenienced and get involved when most people never even notice.”

The event underscores the critical role that leadership plays in ensuring safety within an organization. As Dwight Miller, Senior Director of Safety Training and Loss Prevention, aptly put it, “Safety starts at the top of any organization.” The quick actions taken by the individuals involved not only averted a potential crisis but also exemplified the essence of true safety leadership.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of being vigilant and responsive to the well-being of others, showcasing the impact that individual actions can have in safeguarding lives in unexpected situations.
