April brings warmer weather and, for many of us, a chance to tackle spring projects. For projects that involve digging underground, it’s important to start with one simple but crucial step: call 811 before you dig.
Calling 811 before breaking ground – whether the project is big or small – will help ensure you know where underground utility lines are located. This is a free service that can help keep you safe and prevent damage to utility lines and your property.
“When you dial 811 and provide essential details about your digging plans, you’ll be connected with trained professionals who will coordinate with each local utility company to have the location of underground electric, gas and other lines marked with colored paint, flags or chalk near the excavation site,” emphasized Candace Webb, Manager of Public Safety at FirstEnergy.
“Safety is a core value at FirstEnergy, and this is a message that can save lives and help avoid unnecessary disruptions to the services we rely on,” added Webb. “Calling 811 before you dig is the law, but it’s also a critical step that protects you, your community and your property.”
It is recommended to call 811 at least three business days before your project begins to avoid unnecessary delays. When making the call, ensure you have important information on hand such as your name and contact information, the address where the work will be performed, the location(s) of where digging will take place on the property, and the date work will be performed.
